Inhalte
Well designed and maintained protection systems are important for a reliable operation of distribution and transmission grids. After highlighting general requirements for protection, the main protection principals (overcurrent protection, distance protection, and differential protection) are discussed in detail: • Considerations to guarantee selectivity • Setting calculations • Protection algorithms While protection principles have been state of the art for decades, technology changes are going on in the area of communication, in embedded hardware and in sensoring technologies. These issues are also addressed in the lecture. As the integration of renewable energy sources into the grids has significant impact on protection, this topic is also touched in the lecture. In the summer part of the lecture, the students will apply the theory covered in the winter part in a workshop. In this workshop, a PC-based network simulation software is used to simulate the network including short circuits and the behavior of protection relays is studied interactively.
Lernziele
Students will get an understanding of design principals and applied technology for the protection of distribution and transmission networks. They will be able to understand, modify, and extend existing protection schemes. The knowledge about protection algorithms will allow them to understand the features and technical limits of different protection devices. By this, they will be able to define reasonable protection solutions for a given power system configuration. During the summer workshop, the students will learn how to apply the theoretical topics in practical examples. They learn how to find solutions for given power system configurations and to discuss them intensively with other students of the workshop.
Prüfungsleistung
