Inhalte
Water issues in the world (such as floods, draughts, sanitation, water supply, irrigation). Operational management of the aquatic environment. Ecological, physical, chemical, and biological aspects of the aquatic environment and the related artificial infrastructure/constructions. Part lakes: Physical and chemical properties of freshwaters, importance of morphological structures and abiotic parameters for biological colonization and ecological functions, mixis regimes, typology of lakes, food webs, primary production and respiration, metabolic strategies and matter fluxes (carbon and nutrients), role of sediments, freshwater acidification, water quality and its assessment, EU Water Framework Directive and the ecological assessment of freshwaters. Part streams and rivers: Abiotic factors, channel characteristics, streams as ecosystems, functional compartments, riparian zone and floodplain, hyporheic zone and biofilms, importance of connectivity, selected organisms and their significance to ecology and water management, sources, pathways and turnover of organic matter, processes of self-purification and quality assessment. Case studies from professional projects: Flood protection and management, Ecology and development of waters; EU water framework directive, water rights; Evaluation methods.
Lernziele
Deeper understanding of aquatic ecological structures and functions in lakes and rivers, interaction of abiotic and biotic processes, interaction of biogeochemical cycles and water quality, processes connecting major impacts and water quality. European dimension in water management.
