Voraussetzungen

Empfohlen, im Wortlaut

Bachelor knowledge of mathematics, physics, chemistry, and soil science, soil chemistry.

Inhalte

Lecture Hydrogeology: Aquifers and aquicludes and their properties, estimation of groundwater recharge, groundwater exploration, methods of investigation, groundwater protection. Lecture Soil Chemistry Introduction to the chemical principles necessary to examine the soil environment, describe the soil solid and solution phases, and identify the chemical processes that occur in the soil environment and ultimately impact the fate and behavior of substances in soil and natural water systems. Interactions between soil solids, precipitates and solution phases are characterized. Soil chemical processes like ion exchange, ad(de)sorption are discussed and aspects of bioavailabilty are derived. Seminar: Applications of soil chemistry: • Importance, forms and scale of adsorption and desorption reactions in soil • Quantification of adsorption-desorption processes of the soil-solution-interphase • Chemical behaviour of heavy metals in soil Selected topics are illustrated and practiced with example problems and homework assignments.

Lernziele

At the end of the module the student are able to understand the groundwater systems, their dynamics and the relation to geochemistry in the hydrological cycle. They can discuss about natural and anthropogenic factors and processes as well as the influencing of water and soil quality in the whole hydrological cycle.

Prüfungsleistung

Final Module Examination: • Written examination, 90 min. OR • Oral examination 20 min. Whether the examination will be written or oral will be announced in the first lecture.
