14309 (Modern Concepts in Material Design)

Empfohlen, im Wortlaut

14995 Advanced Organic and Polymer Chemistry; 14298 Methods in Material Analytics Practical experience with fundamental procedures in experimental organic chemistry

Inhalte

- advanced organic reactions such as under inert conditions, with metalorganic reagents and catalysts etc. - Free radical and controlled radical polymerization, polycondensation, polymer analogous reactions, ring-opening polymerization

Lernziele

After successfully finishing the module, students have knowledge and practical skills in the planning, implementation and evaluation of laboratory projects. They are able to plan tasks assigned to them with the aid of literature research, implement them using standard laboratory equipment, evaluate, document and present the results. In the practical laboratory work, students are familiarized with basic operations for the synthesis and purification of polymers as well as advanced organic reactions (e.g. under inert conditions). The synthesis operations enable students to set up and operate standard reaction apparatus and encourage them to develop purification strategies for small molecule and polymer reaction products. Using the example of carrying out syntheses that follow known reaction mechanisms and processing organic analyses, the practical part pursues the fundamental aim of consolidating existing theoretical knowledge of the reactivity of functional groups and applying it in practice. Students have acquired course-related personal skills through communicative discussion in seminars / practical training Furthermore, the students know how to - prepare risk assessments for syntheses, - set up and operate advanced reaction apparatus, - perform advanced operations in organic and polymer synthetic chemistry, - evaluate and select purification methods for reaction mixtures and means of characterization, - solve problems that arise during experiments, - evaluate experimental results based on their quality and formulate suggestions for improvement, - identify the causes of failed experiments, - relate experimental results to theoretical concepts, - independently organize a day in the laboratory through individual or group work, - communicate using technical terminology during laboratory work

Prüfungsleistung

Precondition: Participation in the practical course with 9 experiments, at least 2/3 of the experiments successfully performed, and an accepted version of the protocol MAP: oral examination, 30 min.
