Student Workshop School Meets Science

Studentenworkshop Schule trifft Wissenschaft

6 CPWinterENFÜS

Prerequisites

Recommended, as written

• Basic knowledge in Biology, Cell Biology, Microbiology, Biotechnology and Biochemistry (from a respective study programme or other experience/background) • Interest in science promotion and public engagement with science and technology

Contents

• In order to increase the interest of prospective students in the university, high-school students of grades 10–13 could take part in a workshop on the subject of biotechnology and adjacent topics at BTU. The workshop includes short presentations of BTU students and scientists on current biotechnology topics and short laboratory experiments. • BTU students organise the advertising at the schools and the organisation of the participation in advance. The tasks of BTU students include the planning and execution of laboratory experiments in a team and the preparation of short handout papers. Each student gives a short lecture (15 min.) to a high-school audience. This presentation will be evaluated.

Learning outcomes

• BTU students will learn how to organise a workshop for high-school students on the subject of biotechnology in an independent team. In general they will learn to arrange non-specialist lectures and demonstrations, organising scientific events for younger people and other cross-disciplinary participants, and to improve their public appearance. • After completing the workshop, BTU students will be able to communicate expert knowledge to high-school students in short lectures. BTU students will especially have learnt to adjust to the level of knowledge of a particular audience like high-school students.

Assessment

• Organisation of the workshop including preparation and execution of laboratory experiments in microbiology, biochemistry and cell biology with high-school students: 40 % • Preparation of a handout for the own presentation; the handout must be handed in one week before the presentation event: 20% • Presentation:12 minutes: 40%
