Basics in Fluid Mechanics

Contents

In the course we discuss the basic concepts of turbulence modeling. Subjects are: • Conservation equations and canonical flows • Basic concepts of computational fluid mechanics • The problem related to turbulent flow simulation • Algebraic, 1-, and 2 equation models • Reynolds stress models • Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) approaches • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) • Direct numerical simulation (DNS) • Hybrid turbulence models • Stochastic turbulence models

Learning outcomes

The students know different approaches to model turbulent flows. They are able to decide which turbulence model is adequate for different applications.

Assessment

Oral exam, duration 30-40 min.
