Prerequisites
Recommended, as written
Knowledge of the topics of modules: • 11107 Mathematics - T1 • 11108 Mathematics - T2 • 11206 Mathematics - T3 • 12283 Electrical and Magnetic Fields • 12284 Electrodynamics
Contents
The topic and presentation are from the fields of electrodynamics, physical electronics, radio frequency engineering, and plasma science (e.g., interaction of electromagnetic radiation with matter), including: • Electromagnetic radiation • Phenomenology of light propagation in matter • Interaction of light and matter • Magnetic phenomena, constitutive relations, and plasmas • Quantum description of absorption, emission, and light scattering • Spectroscopy • Optical cavities, stability, lasers • Nonlinear optics • Fiber optics and optical communication systems
Learning outcomes
Students know how to familiarize themselves with a specific new topic and establish a sound understanding of it. They have acquired the skill to prepare a lecture, present it to an audience and defend it in a thorough discussion.
Assessment
• Active attendance of seminar lectures (25%) • Presentation, 30-45 min. (75%)
