Group Theory in Solid State Physics

Gruppentheorie in der Festkörperphysik

6 CPirregularlyENno longer offered

Prerequisites

Recommended, as written

• Knowledge of solid state physics

Contents

• basics of mathematical group theory • representation of groups, theorems of orthogonality • point groups • splitting of atomic states in solid state systems • selection rules • space groups • electrons in periodic potentials • double groups

Learning outcomes

After successfully completing the module, students have acquired knowledge about the application of group theoretical methods in solid state physics. The corresponding abilities allow students the comprehension of state of the art research in the field of theoretical and experimental solid state physics.

Assessment

• Oral examination, 30-45 minutes

Literature (5)
  • H.-W. Streitwolf: Group Theory in Solid State Physics
  • M. Böhm, Symmetrien in Festkörpern
  • W. Ludwig, C. Falter: Symmetries in Physics
