Prerequisites
Recommended, as written
• Knowledge of solid state physics and chemistry based on a Bachelor study course in physics.
Contents
• Material growth and crystal defects • Semiconductors - Electronic band structures - Experimental characterization (effective masses, transition energies) • Semiconductor-nanostructures - Effects of quantum confinement - Fabrication and characterization • Spins and magnetism - Ferromagnetic materials and their characterization - Spin transport in semiconductors • Phase transitions
Learning outcomes
After successfully completing the module, students can handle the basics of experimental solid state physics concerning theoretical and methodical aspects. Based on the topics of this module, they know methods for gaining knowledge, the classify physical findings into the overall context and the cross link individual outcomes. Furthermore, they can apply their social competences like cooperation skills as well as other individual competences like accuracy, patience, curiosity, their own initiative.
Assessment
• Oral examination, 30-45 min.
