Prerequisites
Mandatory, as written
No successful participation in associated phase-out module 13108 Chemie II.
Recommended, as written
Knowledge of the topics of module • 13110 - Basic Natural Sciences or equivalent
Contents
• Chemical bond (σ- and π-bonds, inductive and mesomeric effects, polarizability) • Important classes of compounds and their functional groups alkanes (aliphates), alkenes (olefins), alkynes, aromatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols, ethers, halogenated hydrocarbons, carbonyl compounds, carbonic acid derivatives, amines, heterocyclic compounds, molecular structures, nomenclature, typical physical and chemical properties, important compounds (and their trivial names) • structure-property relations polarity, hydrophilicity, hydrophobicity, acid-base properties, electrophilic and nucleophilic reaction centres, property changes within homologous series, behaviour in the environment • Natural products amino acids - peptides - proteins, fats, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, molecular structures, important physical and chemical properties, role in metabolism (biochemical function) • Compounds relevant in the industry and in the environment plastics, tensides, (poly-)halogenated hydrocarbons, production, important physical and chemical properties, behaviour in the environment • Analytical Chemistry chromatography, validation of analytical methods
Learning outcomes
Students will be able • to analyse functional groups, • to prepare simple organic compounds, • to carry out simple chromatographic experiments, • to estimate structure-property relations regarding the physical, chemical and environmental behaviour of simple organic compounds, • to describe important classes of natural products (e.g. proteins, DNA), • to discribe classes of compounds with industrial and environmental evidence (e.g. organochlorine compounds, tensides).
Assessment
Prerequisite: • Successful completion of the safety instructions including "check of knowledge"-test, and the subsequent practical training with a minimum score incl. submitting the workbook, which has to be hand in to a given deadline.Final module examination: • Written examination, 90 min.
Literature (1)
- Practical training script (incl. Exercise book)
Remarks
