Convection in Fluids and Gases
Konvektion in Flüssigkeiten und Gasen
6 CPSummerEN
Prerequisites
Recommended, as written
• Basics in Analysis and Fluid Mechanics
Contents
• Convection between heated/cooled plates • The Rayleigh-Bernard experiment • The differentially heated rotating annulus • Convection with local sources • Centrifugal- and Coriolis-effects in rotating convection • Convection in spheres and spherical shells • Applications in technical and environmental flows
Learning outcomes
Based on the fundamentals of general fluid mechanics, the course takes an in-depth look at the phenomena of convection. In this case, the nonlinearity of the equations plays a central role. Goal of the course is to develop a clear understanding of convective processes with application to technical and environmental problems. The physical and mathematical techniques also in view of multi-scale nonlinear interactions will be imparted so that the course participants can apply them to practical problems.
Assessment
Prerequisite: • two exercise sheets (ungraded) by the end of the 10th week Final Module Examination: • written examination, 90 minutes
Literature (2)
- Boubnov's and Golitsyn's Book of "Convection in Rotating Fluids"
- Drazin's Book of "Introduction to Hydrodynamik Instability"
