Numerical Fluid Mechanics

Numerische Strömungsmechanik

6 CPSummerEN

Prerequisites

Recommended, as written

• fluid mechanics • numerical methods

Contents

The content of the lecture includes fluid mechanical processes in nature and industry such as heat and mass transfer, vortex formation in incompressible and compressible flows, turbulence modelling and multiphase flows. The student will learn the equation of motion of fluids, the definition of boundary conditions, meshing the geometry, the finite volume method with its numerical discretisation schemes, solving the governing equations and monitoring its convergence and stability. The course will cover the numerical application in the discipline of heat and mass transfer, compressible flow and turbulent flow. The post-processing of results will be taught by visualising and evaluating the computed values in ParaView.

Learning outcomes

The student will be able to identify and characterise fluid mechanical problems and implement those into numerical equations to process those in the open source CFD code “OpenFOAM”. Here, the student will learn the application of computational simulations for different fluid dynamical processes and expand their horizon of more complex flow problems and how they are solved.

Assessment

• written project work, approx. 5000 words of text, excluding references to figures or tables, appendix and indexes (70%) • Presentation of the results, approx. 15 min plus question section (30%) The module is considered to have been passed if 50% of the partial performances have been successfully completed.
