Power Generation Laboratory and Simulation Project

Labor für Energieerzeugung und Simulationsprojekt

6 CPSummerEN

Prerequisites

Mandatory, as written

Module ”Power Plant Technology 1” (35449)

Recommended, as written

Advanced knowledge of energy technology and power plant technology

Contents

• Laboratory work in thermal power plant chemistry (sampling and preparation, determination of water content, ash content, and calorific value of fuels, particle size distribution, thermogravimetric analysis, and water analysis) • Laboratory work at the experimental facility “Renewable Energies” (evaluation of weather data and its influence on grid operation, solar cell, wind turbine, fuel cell) • Thermodynamic modelling using EBSILON PROFESSIONAL • Project report: Development of a concept for a thermal power generation plant.

Learning outcomes

Through active participation, students will acquire the ability to • carry out sampling and sample preparation, • analyse solid and liquid fuels in accordance with applicable standards, • analyse fuel cells characteristics using hydrogen as fuel, • develop concepts for the use of renewable and fossil energy sources, • design and dimension power generation plants with software support, • assess and evaluate power generation plants, and • apply group and teamwork methods

Assessment

Summer Semester: • Project report ”Development of a concept for a thermal power generation plant” (20-30 pages, depending on the topic): 30 % • Presentation to the report ”Development of a concept for a thermal power generation plant” (20 min): 20 % Winter Semester: • Laboratory work in ”Power Plant Chemistry” - 5-6 h (1 day at BTU): 5% • Laboratory report ”Power Plant Chemistry” - 3-4 h: 10 % • Laboratory work ”Renewable Energies” - 5-6 h (1 day at BTU): 5 % • Laboratory report ”Renewable Energies” - 3-4 h: 10 % • Manual calculation of a thermodynamic process - 7-8 h: 15 % • Modelling of a thermodynamic process using EBSILON Professional- 10-12 h (2 days at BTU): 5 %
