6 CPWinterEN

Prerequisites

Recommended, as written

Knowledge of the topics in module • 11213 Mathematik IT-3 (Analysis) • 11908 Systemtheorie I

Contents

This lecture deals with properties and limits of human vision and technological solutions to obtain a realistic, virtual environment in concepts such as virtual reality (VR) and extended reality (XR Aspects on recording, processing, compression, and displaying of visual data are handled in detail. The lecture covers all dimensions of visual aspects including brightness and color, spatial and temporal resolution, 3D vision, and 3D representation of environments. In the lab course, students learn how to use Python to process image and video data including aspects such as data conversion, different filter for denoising images, image quality enhancement, visual data compression, and neural networks for image processing.

Learning outcomes

After successful completion of the module, students can • Give an overview on basic properties of the human visual system • Know and explain all hardware and software components necessary to perform video capturing, processing, and display. • Describe differences and properties of video formats such as fisheye, 360°, high dynamic range, point clouds • Distinguish video formats and discuss advantages and disadvantages • Show real-time demonstrations of these video formats with common portable devices • Assess the quality and the compression performance of video formats • Process and analyze visual data with Python using algorithms based on classic signal processing and neural networks. • compress and denoise image and video data.

Assessment

Prerequisite: • Successful completion of practical tasks (60h) Final module examination: • oral examination, 30-45 min.
