Coupling Free-Surface and Groundwater Modelling
4 CPWinterENno longer offered
Contents
Understanding of water resources depends on interaction of groundwater and free-surface flow. Description of groundwater and rock-flow processes in term of differential equations and common numerical schemes. Transport phenomena of pollutants. Aspects of integration of small to large scale processes. Coupling of interacting processes. High-speed computing (parallel and cluster computing). Modelling of free surface in rivers, lakes and coastal waters will be presented; the basic numerical schemes will be presented (FD, FV, FE); numerical and computational aspects will be discussed; crucial effects of physics and its representation in simulation software will be demonstrated; calibration and validation of models will be shown.
Learning outcomes
Understanding and modelling subsurface flow and contaminant transport; multi-phase problems; rock flow; free surfaces in flow systems; numerical solution schemes, implementation on single and multi-processor computer systems; aspects of distributed modelling; interaction with surface flow; free-suface flow simulation (basics).
