Prerequisites

Recommended, as written

Basics of hydrogeology and geochemistry strongly recommended (e.g. module 42419 Applied Geology)

Contents

Lecture/Seminar "Hydrogeology of Large Catchments”: Methods and approaches for assessing groundwater resources regarding quality and quantity with a focus on the regional scale (large river drainage basins) • Characterisation of groundwater quality • statistical methods to assess natural and anthropogenically influenced conditions • groundwater protection; examples from current research • Balancing the water budget • components of the water balance, esp. groundwater recharge • Environmentally important mass fluxes in soil and groundwater (esp. nitrogen, phosphorus) • Modelling of water balance components and of mass fluxes • concepts, necessary data, validation, software • examples from current researchLecture/Seminar "Investigation of Groundwater Contamination": • principals of contaminated site treatment (registration, exploration, assessment, remediation, aftercare) • legal background • Types of groundwater contamination • physical and chemical properties of contaminants • Migration of contamination in the subsurface • relevant aquifer properties • Investigation methods for contaminated areas • developing a process model of the site for risk assessment and the planning of monitoring and remediation measures • Methods for groundwater restoration / remediation

Learning outcomes

This module provides an understanding of two important applications of hydrogeology: • Applications of hydrogeology for the management of catchment areas • Investigation of groundwater contaminations and their remediation

Assessment

• LE/SE "Hydrogeology of Large Catchments": seminar presentation • LE/SE "Investigation and Remediation of Groundwater Contamination": Written exam (90 min.) about lecture contents or presentation (depending on the number of students) Module grade: each component: 50%
